MTN
Nigeria
- 10yrs Experience |

Without
doubt, for the past decade, MTN has been in Nigeria doing business and
making huge profits. It is common place for them to force their
products and services into the subconscious minds of Nigerians via
television commercials, radio jingles, highway billboards, newspapers,
handbills, flyers and any other means they think would work well for
them. They have done so much in providing Nigerians mobile
communication services and have also done so well in ripping out the
pockets of those Nigerians on their network.
I started using MTN barely six months into their operations in Nigeria.
Then you would buy a Nokia 3310 and a sim card from MTN at a whooping
sum of N50,000 (fifty thousand naira); they sold their sim then for
N20,000 (twenty thousand naira). Nigerians had little or no choice at
all but to accept this rip off or stay out of mobile communications.
For me, I chose to stay in it and hoped to see things improve. Now the
question is, ten years down the line, has MTN Nigeria gotten better?
Well, if you ask me, no one pays N20,000 for an MTN sim today in
Nigeria but they are still not doing well in terms of service charge.
MTN Nigeria still has the highest rates when compared with other
networks currently operating in Nigeria. So the answer is NO, they have
not gotten better at all!
I did a little survey and asked people how they are feeling about the
mobile telecoms company that has made billions of dollars doing
business in Nigeria over the past decade (MTN) and their answers
weren’t surprisingly at all, a large 80% of subscribers on
MTN Nigeria’s network want out. They complain of high call
rates and bad internet services; not to mention the most annoying
customer service that would keep you online for hours before attending
to you and still wont solve the problem you are facing using their
network.
In my own personal case, my internet bundled stopped for two weeks for
no just reason. As usual, to fulfill all righteousness, I called 180,
their customer care line and complained. It took two full weeks to get
my internet service back by their technical department and although I
was promised compensation for those two weeks; they compensated me by
saying WE ARE SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE CAUSED! What?? Can you
believe that? MTN Nigeria must be kidding me! I paid for that internet
bundle remember? So there goes the money I paid for internet for two
weeks and nothing coming out of it. If you ask me, this is one big
level of subscriber fraud by MTN Nigeria. Many Nigerians have suffered
similar fate and many more are currently still suffering this FRAUD!
It is no news that MTN Nigeria sends spam text messages to Nigerians.
We all know when we receive important news updates and emergency
notifications, and we sure do know when we are being spammed with
product campaigns which we did not subscribe for. Ask anyone using the
MTN Nigeria line and you are sure to get reports showing that they have
been spammed directly by the company at one point or the other. So,
please MTN Nigeria, stop sending us these spam text messages!
Stop forcing us into buying your services by deception. The latest spam
fraud by MTN Nigeria comes through their CALLERTUNEZ subscription. They
renew it automatically without notice, so if you are on their network
and have subscribed to callertunes before, then be sure to keep losing
money from your call credits without notice. Also, they have creatively
included a short voice message just before a caller hears the ringing
sound when calling another MTN Nigeria subscriber that has an active
callertunes subscription. This voice message reads “TO COPY
THIS TUNE PRESS ONE”. However, what they are not telling you
the caller is that you would pay for the copied tune and would keep
paying for its renewals, and if you are unfortunate to copy more than
one, then your call credits will keep running off whenever its time to
renew.
I wonder why MTN Nigeria seems so confident in taking the concerns of
their Nigerian subscribers for granted. Is it that they believe that
the Nigerian Communication Commission is too weak to deal with them?
Or is it that they believe that Nigerians are not ever going to come
out and put a stop to their mess? Well, whatever is giving them their
confidence, things are about to change now; starting here with this
publication.
MTN Nigeria had better sit up or sit out! Even if the company believes
it is the best mobile telecoms company operating in Nigeria right now,
that
is
still not good enough reason for them to take Nigerians (especially
their
subscribers) for granted; certainly not!
For every Nigerian that shares my views about this company
(MTN Nigeria), please submit your experience. Let us build Nigeria.
